Breathing Room Message Series | Dollars and Sense

We live in a culture that continually tells us to pursue a higher standard of living in order to improve our quality of life. But “standard of living” and “quality of life” aren’t the same. One has to do with the stuff we accumulate. The other is about the peace we experience regardless of our circumstances.

What if your pursuit of a standard of living is undermining your quality of life?

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
Luke 16:13

Breathing Room Message Series | Time

We’re all busy. Our schedules are packed with career, family, friends, church, and other responsibilities. Sometimes our days are so full that we don’t enjoy anything because we’re trying to do everything. Our relationships bene t when we create breathing room in our schedules. But where do we start?

Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we y away. Psalm 90:10

Breathing Room Message Series begins | Ex-Squeeze Yourself

Our lives are busy and fast-paced. Lack of margin increases our stress and shortens our tempers. It can distract us from the most important things in our lives, and our relationships suffer. It can even affect our relationship with God because there’s a connection between our willingness to create margin and our faith.

Life is better with breathing room.

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek rst his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:31–34

You'll Be Glad You Did Message Series - Share the Wealth

Matthew 25:19-21, 26

Our culture says life’s value is found in what we achieve or what we accumulate. But those things eventually fade away. We each have a treasure chest full of life experiences that will die with us unless we become intentional about distributing our wealth. The value of your life is found when we share those experiences.

You'll Be Glad You Did Message Series - The Secret Sauce

No one likes to be wrong. No one likes to be told what to do. But insisting that you’re always right isn’t a recipe for a great marriage. Great marriages are built on humility . . . on the willingness of both spouses to submit to each other and to God.

But how do you do that? It all begins with prayer.

James 3:17

Joint Worship Sunday - join us as we come together to worship with Seattle Disciple Church (Korean), Living Waters Baptist Church (Chinese) and Iglesia de la Voz (Guatemalan).

You'll Be Glad You Did Message Series - Get Out, Stay Out & Clean Out

Today’s decisions become tomorrow’s realities. Wise and discerning people understand that. They choose to live as if life is connected, as if each decision matters. That’s because they know that their present becomes their past that shapes their future. In each season of life we make decisions that shape what our lives look like in the next season.

Your decisions as a single person will shape what your future marriage looks like.

You'll Be Glad You Did Message Series - Labelmaker

We all wear labels. Many of the labels we wear were placed on us by others—parents, siblings, friends, teachers, coaches, or coworkers. But what if we’re carrying around the wrong labels?

Who has the right to label you? Who are you going to allow to label you? Who knows best how to label you? Labels create expectations and expectations influence the direction of our lives.

September Message Series - Good God

There's one question about God that elicits the most emotion, but has no emotionally satisfying answer. "If God is good, why is there so much suffering in the world?" If God were all-powerful, he could eliminate suffering. If God were loving, he would eliminate suffering. So, is he unable or unwilling?

August Message Series - Part 5 - What Truly Matters?

Part 5 - What Truly Matters? - This can guide you through an everyday decision or through the biggest decisions of your life. This can bring focus in a meeting and can change the course of a relationship. In your faith, this can matter immensely – it is so easy to get distracted by things that just don’t matter in an ultimate sense – to make your faith about something other than following Jesus and living out his mission. Don’t let the small stuff get in the way of the important stuff. Don’t give into the tyranny of the urgent. Don’t let the urgent derail the important in your life, faith, and relationships.

Scripture: Acts 15:22-35 – The early church was seeing an incredible movement of the gospel into the Gentile population. Some were distracted by legal requirements of Judaism, but were missing what was of first importance – the gospel of Jesus Christ – a gospel that is about freedom and relationship – not rules. Wisely, the early church was able to listen to God and stay focused on what truly matters – the good news of Jesus was proclaimed to Jews and Gentiles. Where in your life, faith and relationships do you need to refocus on what truly matters?

August Message Series - Part 4 - How Can I Help?

August Message Series - Part 4 - How Can I Help?

Part 4 - How Can I Help? - How you help matters as much as that you do help. When you follow Christ’s command to serve others, to put the interest of others before your own – you are acting selflessly, but it can be easy for self to sneak back in and make serving more about you, a savior complex or a need to be recognized for that help. How you help matters greatly – serving others with good boundaries, good motivations, and a loving heart is what is needed. Better not to serve at all if you can’t do it without making it all about you.

Scripture: Acts 10 – Peter and Cornelius. Cornelius is not the usual audience for Paul, in fact, they aren’t supposed to interact. But Peter listens to God and then asks how he can help. Not according to his desires or religious expectations –but in a way that will honor God’s plans and purposes and truly be helpful to those being helped. Begins the mission to the Gentiles. Who are you called to help and how?

August Message Series - Part 3 - Wait, What? Couldn't We At Least...?

Part 3 - Couldn't We At Least...? - When you feel stuck – this can help you get unstuck. Couldn’t we at least – is a way to begin. Most things never happen because we fail to begin. If you are stuck in your life, faith, or relationships – or you’ve had good intentions but have failed to act – this question can help you begin. Couldn’t I at least…start. Couldn’t I at least give it a try and see where it leads?

Scripture: Acts 8:26-38 – Philip and the early church are scattered but keep proclaiming the good news. Couldn’t we at least preach where we are? He sees the Ethiopian, couldn’t we at least read the Scripture together. Couldn’t I at least tell the story of Jesus? Couldn’t I at least be baptized? It started with a conversation and then turned into a baptism! Couldn’t I at least invite my neighbors over for dinner? Couldn’t we at least give it a try? Couldn’t we at least…begin and see what happens? Gradually, then suddenly. One step at a time – couldn’t we at least – one idea, one discipline, one relational investment at a time – and then suddenly – something amazing might happen!

August Message Series - Part 2 - Wait, What? I Wonder...?

Part 2 - I Wonder...? - You’ve probably asked this question in some way, shape or form in your life. I wonder why? I wonder if..? Both bring us to a better understanding of a story or situation – and open us up to God’s possibilities and plans. This question gives life to our curiosity, our desire to learn and know and to grow. It’s a part of who God made us to be. When was the last time you stopped to wonder about something – to learn and grow because of it? Never lose a holy curiosity. Curiosity helps us discover what’s possible, to discover what we don’t know.

Scripture: Acts 6:1-7 – I wonder why there are problems with the distribution of food – turned into a question – I wonder if…I wonder if we selected some people to oversee that, we would all benefit and the gospel proclamation could go forward. I wonder…if we offered three varieties of music…I wonder if we had a rolling schedule…I wonder why my relationships aren’t healthy – I wonder if I reached out to that person what would happen.

August Message Series begins - Wait, What? Life's Essential Questions

Part 1: Wait, What? - Introduction to message series – the questions we ask matter a great deal. How are you doing at asking what James Ryan calls: Life’s Essential Questions? When it come to our life, faith, and relationships – these questions can help us grow, gain clarity, keeping moving forward, name and face reality, and more. Our first question: “wait, what?” helps us stop and gain clarity and understanding. Where are you making assumptions in your life, faith and relationships instead of stopping to investigate further or seek deeper understanding before responding.

Scripture: Acts 3 – the beggar is healed. Wait, what? The beggar must have thought when offered healing instead of money. Wait, what? The people must have thought when they saw the beggar dancing and praising God. Wait, what? When Peter told them the story of a Messiah who came to give his life instead of conquer an empire. By faith in Jesus – life, true life is found.
