At Marine View, we believe that acts of generosity are inextricably connected to our life as followers of Jesus Christ. When we practice generosity we offer life and hope and grow in our faith. Over the past several weeks, we've watched in amazement and with gratitude as the coats and shoes and socks have piled high in the front of the church on Sunday mornings. We've stuffed arm load after armload into waiting vehicles for transport to Living Grace Ministries in downtown Tacoma.
Warm coats and sturdy shoes. Tremendous generosity. And that's fantastic. But if it ends there, we've missed it. At Marine View, we see The Generosity Project as a beginning point. These past two weeks represent acts of generosity that will make a tremendous difference and will matter greatly to those who receive a warm coat and sturdy pair of shoes. But more than that, these gifts of coats and shoes are practice for a life filled with acts of generosity all the time. Each day we have the opportunity to be generous by opening our hands to give and give and give again.
The Apostle Paul writing to the 1st Century Christian community in Corinth says, "You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in Thanksgiving to God." 2 Corinthians 9:11
Try it. Practice an act of generosity today. Open your hand to give, to serve, to offer friendship, or an listening ear. And then do it again tomorrow. Pay attention to what happens in your heart as you give and watch as your generosity helps connect a real person with real needs to the very real story of God's love.
